Why do we not remember dreams
Surely you will have heard more than once to tell someone that she never dreams of. It isn’t true. We all dream every night, but we don’t always remember dreams. The explanation to this forgetfulness of dreams is given by sleep specialists and has to do with our own cycle of vigil and sleep.
Not to get entangled with scientific terms, people who remember what people who have a tendency to wake up more times during the night are. Dreams occur in the REM phase and if our brain wakes up right in that phase, it is easier for the memory of the dream to stay until the next morning.
But throughout the night, the sleep cycle happens several times. If we do not wake up, dreams are happening to each other and when we wake up in the morning we don’t remember anything. Why do we remember nightmares? Because the negative emotions that this type of dreams produce make us woke up more easily.
This explanation is easy to understand and does not invite meaning to forget dreams. However, the great dream expert, Sigmund Freud, had a very different explanation for the cases in which we forget dreams. According to Freud, all the dreams we forget are dreams that remind us of the repressed desires we keep in the subconscious and that we do not really want to remember.
