The interpretation of dreams according to Freud

Sigmund Freud is considered the father of psychoanalysis and also the main reference in terms of the interpretation of dreams. Without a doubt, it is a figure to take into account when unraveling the meaning of dreams, but we must not forget that both psychoanalysis and dream interpretation theory has advanced enough since Mr. Freud’s proposals.

The meaning of dreams according to Freud

That is why when interpreting dreams we do not always agree with what Sigmund Freud revealed to us in his day. For him, dreams were the unconscious manifestation of all our desires, drives and yearnings that we did not dare to recognize consciously and that we let go of dreams as a kind of liberation.

From this point of view, Sigmund Freud attributed a more literal meaning to dreams, especially to erotic dreams towards those who had a kind of fixation for not calling obsession. We do not want to be irreverent with a figure like that of Mr. Freud, but the fact of attributing, for example, a lesbian dream to a sexual desire product of child trauma, it seems most inappropriate.

Repressed desires, sexual drives, inhibitions … are triggers of all kinds of dreams, according to Freud. The mind seeks a way to release everything that is repressed and finds it through dreams. But that this takes us again and again, as in a closed circle to erotic dreams, makes us think that this theory is not what leads us to find the meaning of dreams.

We agree that the subconscious many times knows things about ourselves that we do not dare to recognize or that we cannot recognize because we have not yet noticed. But our subconscious has no concrete fixation with our sex life, as Freud proposed. Rather, dreams find their meaning in the symbolism of what is dream and interpretation is directed towards an area of personal development and personality knowledge.
